Shillong, Sept 17: Health Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, on Tuesday stressed that students who went to pursue MBBS through State government-quota must return to Meghalaya to serve the state after completing their studies.
Speaking to reporters, Ampareen highlighted the shortage of specialist doctors in the state and stressed the importance of fulfilling the bond agreements tied to government-sponsored education.
She expressed concern over the trend of medical graduates not returning to the state after completing their studies and assured that the government will take action to ensure compliance with the agreements.
“It should be mandatory for all medical students who avail medical seats from the quota of the State of Meghalaya should return back to the State,” said the Minister.
The Minister added that when one dig deep as to why the doctors who have been allocated seat from the state government quota as to why they are not returning back, she said that the State of Meghalaya till date do not have a medical council and that is the first difficult point.
It may be mentioned, on July 9 of this year the State government has announced the decision to review the bond policy to address the shortage of doctors in the state. The Health Minister informed that the department is actively engaging with the law department for reviewing and revisiting the bond policy to ensure to a large extent, the doctors and students come back to serve the people of Meghalaya.
Additionally, Ampareen announced that the first batch of doctoral studies in Meghalaya is set to commence in 2025, as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the state’s medical infrastructure.
