SHILLONG, SEP 10: The Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) has decided to accept the invitation of the Vice Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) for discussion on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

In a statement, MCTA general secretary AW Rani said that the association has received an invitated dated September 8, for a dialogue concerning the NEP 2020 issue.

“In the said invite though the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the potential benefits of implementing the NEP, there was no acknowledgment of the tangible challenges,” Rani said while adding “Nonetheless, the MCTA which is committed to work towards betterment of the education sector optimistically anticipates a constructive and fruitful dialogue and has resolved vide its’ emergent EEC meeting, to accept this invitation.”

The discussion between the MCTA and the NEHU VC will be held on Monday.

He said that the Association looks up to the Vice-Chancellor to address and redress the valid concerns of the Association as raised by it right from the on July 21.

The MCTA had been demanded the NEHU VC to immediately withdraw the July 12 – notification to end the ongoing stalemate over the implementation of NEP.

The MCTA had termed the notification issued by the officer on special duty of NEHU’s college development council (CDC) Debasish Chowdhury on July 12, to the principals of all affiliated colleges for implementation of the NEP as a “blatant lie”.

The MCTA has questioned the alleged “hasty” decision to implement the NEP despite the fact that the majority of the colleges are not prepared for it.

Rani had earlier informed that teachers of the 22 colleges under the banner of the MCTA are boycotting first semester classes under the NEP and are not undertaking any assignments like setting up of question papers for the first semester courses under the new education policy. However, they continue to teach students of 3rd to 5th semesters under the present course.

“The way forward to end this stalemate according to us is for the VC to withdraw this notification and roll back this NEP from this academic session and go back to the old course. We are on agitation for nearly a month therefore, we request the VC to withdraw this notification and end the stalemate,” Rani had then said.
