Jowai, Nov 19: The Opposition MDC from War Central, Holando Lamin has questioned the Executive Committee of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) on whether an NOC was issued by the Council for acquisition of land for fencing of the International border with Bangladesh.
Replying to the query during the Winter Session of the JHADC on Friday, the CEM Thombor Shiwat informed that an NOC had been issued for the matter.Shiwat further informed that the Executive Committee had taken the decision to issue the NOC based on the report and the Joint Inspection that was conducted by the Council and the Coordination Committee on International Border.
To this, Holando objected by stating that after fencing the people from border areas will lose 6,000 to 8,000 acres of farmlands to Bangladesh and this will have a huge impact on the future generations because most of the families are dependent on farming.
On the matter, Thombor Shiwat informed that the NOC was issued based on the request and letter that was issued by the government from time to time because border areas of most of the state have been fenced except in West Jaiñtia Hills.
Taking note of the reply by the CEM that the NOC was issued based on repeated requests by the Government, Holando Lamin urged upon the JHADC to cancel the NOC and solve the matter amicably with the Waheh Chnongs (headmen), the Dollois and other stakeholders before taking further steps on the issue.
