Shillong, March 19: Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Wednesday assured that regular appointment against the vacant posts will be filled up once the financial position of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) improved.
After meeting a delegation of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Mondal said, “As of now we are having a lot of financial problem… and due to that we are not going ahead immediately but recently we had advertised some post also. Regular appointments will be done as and when MeECL is financially sound, that has been apprised by them (FKJGP).”
He admitted that the vacant posts have been there for a very long time due to many reasons and factors. The minister, however, said that “the government frequently is reviewing not only MeECL but other departments also to see that employment opportunities are given to our youths. We are working on that line.”

Highlighting the number of vacancies in the corporation, Mondal informed that advertisements have recently been issued for 67 field engineers—57 for electrical and mechanical and 10 for civil—and 64 field supervisors, including 54 for electrical and mechanical and 10 for civil.
Mondal also elaborated on the financial difficulties faced by MeECL, stating, “The financial health of MeECL is under tremendous strain. Revenue collection is very low compared to expenditure.” Despite this, he shared that significant steps had been taken to reduce dues with NTPC, which initially stood at Rs. 664 crores.
He further added that negotiations by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma led to a rebate, bringing the amount down to Rs. 565 crore, which is being paid in monthly instalments of Rs. 15.7 crore. “By 2026-27, I think all dues should be cleared,” he remarked. He also confirmed that MeECL continues to procure power from NTPC with no pending current dues.
Mondal stressed the need for collective efforts to improve the power sector in the state. He said, “For the development of the power sector in our state, we have to work together.”
