Shillong, Aug 23: The government of Meghalaya has been aggressively implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in the state, achieving a completion rate of 56.39 per cent.
Informing this on Tuesday, PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak said challenges remain in certain districts due to disruptions in power connections. But he assured that as power is restored, the completion percentage will rise.
Marak informed that once normalcy returns, around 80,000 households will receive JJM water connections directly, as pipeline installation is nearly finished. These households are primarily located in East Khasi Hills, East and West Jaiñtia Hills, sections of South West Khasi Hills, and parts of the Garo Hills District.
When queried, the minister stated that the ultimate target is 6,51,556 households. Presently, the government has provided connections to 3,67,447 households. The Indian Government has set a deadline of January 26, 2024, for JJM implementation.
In the last inspection, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, patted the state for the progress of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) implementation and called it a torch-bearer for other states.
On April 1, Government of India released grant-in-aid of Rs 299.24 crore for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Meghalaya for the year 2022-23. The Ministry of Jal Shakti said the amount is an additional fund to provide functional household tap connections to rural houses in the State.
