Shillong, Nov 27: Meghalaya government is studying successful journalist welfare models from other states to incorporate the best elements into its scheme.
The government has approved the Meghalaya Journalists Welfare Scheme 2024, set to roll out from December 1.
Announcing the decision post-cabinet meeting, Information & Public Relations Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh expressed optimism about the scheme’s impact on the state’s press fraternity.
“The scheme is now operational, and we will keep journalists informed about its various components as they unfold,” Lyngdoh stated, highlighting that this approval fulfills a long-standing demand from the media community.
The revamped scheme introduces significant enhancements to financial aid. Compensation for loss of life has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh, while medical assistance for journalists facing severe health issues has been raised from ₹50,000 to ₹3 lakh.
Lyngdoh also confirmed the inclusion of a support fund for veteran journalists, acknowledging their long-standing contributions. “We’re committed to supporting accredited journalists in need. A dedicated committee will finalize the operational details, ensuring the scheme meets their specific requirements,” she said.
“This initiative is a major step forward, and I hope the press fraternity welcomes it as a significant response to their long-pending demands,” she said.
