Shillong, March 2: The National People’s Party (NPP) is all set to emerge as the single largest party and retain power in the State as the party has won 20 seats by 2 PM on Thursday, even as counting was underway for the 2023 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly elections held on February 27, 2023.
The counting of ballots began at 8 am on Thursday morning.
Of the major wins, the Mahendraganj was won by Sanjay A. Sangma of NPP, who defeated sitting legislator Dikkanchi D Shira of AITC. Dikkanchi is the wife of AITC leader Dr. Mukul Sangma.
Another major setback for AITC was losing the Rangsakona seat, which was earlier won by Mukul’s brother Zenith Sangma. He lost of NPP’s Subir Marak.
Also, Mukul himself lost from Tikrikilla seat by a margin of 5310 votes. NPP’s Jimmy D Sangma won Tikrikilla seat by securing 13150 votes. Now, all eyes are on the counting for Songsak, of which Mukul is the sitting legislator. At the time of filing this report, he was in the lead with 10107 votes after round 5 of counting. He was closely trailed by NPP’s Nihim D Shira with 9750 votes, a gap of just 357 votes.
Similar, Brening A Sangma of NPP won Dalu seat by defeating BJP’s Akki A Sangma by a close margin.
Timothy D. Shira of NPP retained the Resubelpara seat, Ampareen Lyngdoh retained East Shillong seat, Prestone Tynsong retained Pynursla, Raliang was retained by Coming One Ymbon, Wailadmiki Shylla retained Jowai.
Till the filing of this report, NPP was leading in few more seats.

On the other hand, AITC leader and Mukul Sangma’s daughter Miani D. Shira retained the Ampati seat.
Also, in a major setback to NPP, AITC’s Rupa M. Marak won the Dadenggre seat with a margin of just 7 votes. She defeated NPP leader and Conrad K. Sangma’s brother James K Sangma. Rupa polled 15619 votes while James polled 15612 votes.
