Shillong, March 28: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming (Repeal) Bill 2023 to repeal the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021.

The Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021, was notified and published on March 26, 2021, in the official gazette, and was enacted by the legislature of the state of Meghalaya.

Following the bitter opposition from various quarters, VPP MLA Ardent M Basiawmoit appealed for the amendment of the section that regulates the issuance of licences to operate casinos in the State. However, Taxation Minister Abu Taher Mondal informed that the term of the provisional licences has expired and one of the licensees has withdrawn the bank guarantee. Satisfied with the clarification of the Minister In-charge, the VPP MLA withdrew the demand for amendment.

It may be mentioned that three licences had been issued to three applicants by the government on September 12, 2023.
