Shillong, Dec 5: Meghalaya Liberation Association of Visually Impaired (MLAVI) on Monday announced its decision to be dissolved as an organization to prevent illegal collection in its name.

Speaking to media persons, president of MLAVI Elkin Rynniaw said that in the past it has been noticed that there are many individuals who are collecting donations from the public in the name of the association without notice.

Rynniaw informed that in the meeting held on 9 October, it was also decided to dissolve the association as they have failed to register owing to many individuals taking advantage in the name of the association.

“In place of the MLAVI, we have decided to form the National Inclusive Society for Downtrodden Community (NISDC) which will be headed by the same members and we are here to inform the public that from now anything related to the visually impaired should be address by the NISDC” said Rynniaw.

Meanwhile, Beningstar Kharpor, who is visually impaired, urged the public to address them as visually impaired and not Blind persons as the word blind degrades those who are visually impaired.

“The words Blind or Deaf and others are not politically correct and such words degrade the PWDs hence people must choose wise words like visually impaired when addressing,” said Kharpor.

Kharpor urged the public to work together in fulfilling the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nation which deal with inclusion of people with disabilities (PWDs) in the society.
