Shillong, March 26: Meghalaya’s Health Minister, Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, has made a heartfelt appeal to Meghalayan medical professionals working outside the state, urging them to return and contribute to the development of Shillong Medical College. Chairing the Governing Council meeting of the Shillong Medical College Management Society, Dr. Lyngdoh emphasized the critical role of local talent in shaping this landmark institution.

“We want a ghar wapsi in the medical fraternity. We are calling on our sons and daughters of the soil—Meghalayans—to come back and be part of this crucial initiative,” she said.

Dr. Lyngdoh said the government has won the case concerning the erstwhile Suraksha Center. “Fortunately, we are happy that the government has won the case,” she said, confirming that the administrative block has been handed over to the contractor, clearing the way for further developments.

Recruitment of teaching faculty is progressing well, with newly appointed professors already joining their posts. Accommodations have been arranged in a 12-unit building, and departmental teaching assignments—covering disciplines such as anatomy—have been allocated. To address potential challenges, a one-day workshop involving departmental heads and other stakeholders is being planned.

Dr. Lyngdoh stressed the importance of a well-equipped academic environment. “We need proper lecture rooms, a well-stocked library, and all essential facilities to ensure the smooth functioning of the college,” she said. Technical assistance for the project is in place, keeping preparations for the NMC inspection on track.

The Minister also announced that advertisements for courses—including details on applications, fees, and eligibility—are expected to be released by the end of April. Expressing confidence in the timeline, she stated, “If everything goes well with the NMC inspection, we should be on our way to making the medical college fully operational.
