Shillong, Dec 22: After the tweet of AITC leader and former cricketer Kirti Azad went viral, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma termed it as ‘malicious’ and an ‘insult’ to a traditional dress of the Khasi community and has demanded an apology from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader.

Sangma said the Trinamool Congress leader has not only insulted the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi but also insulted a traditional dress and culture of the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya.

The former cricketer turned politician had poked fun on Twitter on December 21, 2022, by tweeting a photoshopped picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Khasi traditional attire. Azad had tweeted a pic of PM Modi wearing the Khasi traditional attire and commented – is it male of female attire and that PM Modi loves to make fashion statement.

The tweet has brought outrage by tweeter users both from the state and outside.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the act and tweeted: “It is saddening to see how @KirtiAzaad is disrespecting the culture of Meghalaya and mocking our tribal attire. TMC must urgently clarify if they endorse his views. Their silence will amount to tacit support and thus will not be forgiven by the people.”

Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu also condemned the TMC leader’s contemptuous comment. He tweeted: “Dear @KirtiAzaad ~ Your making mockery of rich tribal traditions of Meghalaya, and our rich tribal heritage, is contemptuous and abominable. Your language is pitiable, and an affront on the dignity of womanhood. I condemn it.”
