Shillong, May 2: With the South West Monsoon approaching, the Meghalaya government has ramped up disaster preparedness efforts. A high-level review meeting was held in Shillong on Friday, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, focusing on early warning systems, swift emergency response, and district-level readiness.
The Chief Minister called for a proactive approach to disaster management, including hazard mapping, timely weather alerts, and coordination among departments. He stressed the need for immediate assistance during disasters—especially ex-gratia payments, support for damaged homes, and provision of basic necessities. Deputy Commissioners were directed to ensure prompt relief reaches even the most remote areas.

Key areas discussed included evacuation plans, vulnerability assessments, activation of control rooms, and mock drills. The status of the Disaster & Relief Monitoring System (DRMS) and sectoral preparedness in roads, power, water, health, and agriculture were also reviewed.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure through robust disaster management planning. Strengthening of block and village-level disaster committees was identified as a key priority.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Chief Minister, Health Minister, Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Revenue & Disaster Management, and senior officials from various departments including SDMA, IMD, SDRF, and DDMAs. Deputy Commissioners from across districts participated virtually.
