Shillong, Nov 10: Cabinet Minister Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh emphasised the Meghalaya government’s commitment to nurturing the film industry in the state on Thursday during the inauguration of the Kelvin Cinema Festival 2023.
The Kelvin film festival, held at the State Central Library, Shillong, was organised by the Shankar Lall Genka and Jeevan Ram Mungi Devi Goenka Public Charitable Trust.
Minister Lyngdoh acknowledged the complexities associated with this endeavour but asserted that the government is determined to promote the film industry in Meghalaya.
She highlighted that filmmakers have often felt overlooked by the authorities, but under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, there will be a concerted effort to support and elevate the local film-making community.
Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla echoed similar sentiments in his address, expressing concern about the current state of the film industry in the state.
Shylla acknowledged that while the Meghalaya film industry may not be as prominent as Bollywood or Hollywood, this should not deter local filmmakers. He emphasised the importance of nurturing and developing the industry, which would lead to its growth and popularity.
The inaugural ceremony of the film festival also paid tribute to various actors who have contributed significantly to local cinema, including those who have since passed away, as well as singers and other contributors to the industry.
