Meghalaya Govt honours 8 senior journalists, bestows them with cash awards

Shillong, Sept 20: Eight senior journalists from Meghalaya were on Friday felicitated by Meghalaya government for their dedicated service towards journalism, spanning a career of several decades.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma felicitated these journalists and lauded them for their professionalism and hard work for several years. He also bestowed them with cash reward of Rs. 1 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant.

The journalists who were felicitated were P Marwein, Editor, Youth Today; Subroto Bhattacharjee, former Bureau Chief of UNI; R M Shabong, Editor, U Rupang; M M Thaiang, Editor, Yutip; Manas Choudhury, former Editor of The Shillong Times; Independent Journalists Sanat Chakraborty and Linda Chhakchhuak, and senior photographer of The Shillong Times, Sanjib Bhattacharjee.

Address in the gathering of joranlists from all over the State at the 1st Meghalaya Media Meet 2024 on the theme “Redefining Journalism in the Digital Age” in Shillong on Friday, CM Sangma acknowledged that successive governments – past and present – have not done enough to recognize the contribution of journalists – both the senior and the current ones.

“This was when we as a government felt the need to have programs like this to recognize and felicitate the hard work by the journalists, meet and discuss the way forward in the larger interest of the media fraternity to ensure that the sector thrives and prospers following ethical codes and also adapting itself to the technological changes,” he said.

Earlier, Information & Public Relations Minister, Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “The media fraternity looks up to the government for a lot of things and we start today to handhold the media and to look at the ways in which we can better the lives and working conditions of the media fraternity and recognize the hard work the journalists are engaged in.”

She also mentioned that the government will try to improve the life of journalists in whatever way possible and is actively looking at the proposals of housing scheme, pension scheme for the media fraternity of the State.
