Meghalaya Govt launches workshop for hearing & speech impaired to make theatre inclusive

Must read

Shillong, July 15: Theatre has long been a powerful medium for expressing emotions and telling stories. However, its essence often remains inaccessible to those who cannot hear the words and sounds integral to the theatrical experience.

Recognizing these limitations, the Arts and Culture Department of Government of Meghalaya launched a 5-day Theatre Workshop on Monday for individuals with hearing and speech impairments. This unique initiative, part of the Umbrella Project, aims to make theatre accessible and inclusive. The workshop is being held at the Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre in Umniuh-Khwan, Ri Bhoi District, from July 15 to July 19, 2024.

Theatre has long been a powerful medium for expressing emotions and telling stories. However, its essence often remains inaccessible to those who cannot hear the words and sounds integral to the theatrical experience.

This initiative seeks to bridge the gap by utilizing sign language and visual communication as core components of the theatrical experience.

Participants will engage in an intensive exploration of theatre, including acting, directing, scriptwriting, and production, all conducted through sign language. This approach promises to transform the traditional theatrical experience into a visually engaging and intellectually stimulating journey. The sessions will be led by Bryan Dunlee Wahlang and his associate, Reynold Jones Lyngdoh Nongbet, both of whom bring extensive experience in theatrical arts and sign language instruction.

The workshop is designed to offer comprehensive training in various theatrical skills such as stagecraft, character development, improvisation, and movement. Through these activities, participants will learn to express emotions and tell stories through visual cues. Moreover, the workshop will cultivate a supportive community atmosphere, fostering friendships and collaboration among participants, which will benefit both their artistic and personal lives.

The impact of the workshop extends beyond individual participants. By showcasing the talents of hearing-impaired actors, the initiative aims to challenge societal perceptions and promote inclusivity in the broader theatre community. The performances resulting from the workshop will serve as a platform for educating the public about sign language and enhancing empathy and understanding toward the hearing-impaired community.
