Shillong, April 13: The ongoing unrest at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has drawn serious concern from the Meghalaya government, which has now urged Governor C. H. Vijayashankar to intervene and help resolve the matter.

Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma acknowledged the prolonged impasse and said that while the State government has limited authority over the issue, it is in regular contact with the Union Ministry of Education to find a solution.

“Our Chief Minister is constantly in touch with the Ministry and receives regular updates. I have also taken up the matter with the Centre to work out a sustainable solution as soon as possible,” the Minister said.

He further added, “We have met and discussed the issue with the Governor and requested him to take it up at his level.”

Appealing to all stakeholders, Sangma said, “I personally request the NEHU students, faculty members, and also the Minister of Education (Union Minister) —if the problem can be addressed at the earliest, it will be good for everyone. At the end of the day, this really disturbs the education environment on campus, which we don’t want to see.”

The Education Minister also informed that discussions are ongoing with the students’ body of the university to better understand the concerns and work towards a resolution.
