Shillong, June 15: Meghalaya social welfare department on Thursday held a meeting with the Shillong All Faiths Forum (SAFF) to discuss about the drug menace in the state.
Speaking to media persons, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh said the Government will sanction Rs 10 crore per annum to the faith-based organisations to combat the problem of drugs.
Lyngdoh said the meeting was very fruitful and that suggestions were given by the leaders.
“Discussion was on the need to up the ante against narcotic situation and the need to increase the number of counselling institutions and also give awareness. Issues of including menace of drugs in a school curriculum, students creating awareness were also discussed in the meeting,” mentioned Lyngdoh.
He added that since they have identified 7 districts as hotspot of drug users, the social welfare department has decided to intensify the campaign in Shillong since it is the major hotspot area.
“In this pilot project we will zone Shillong into various zones. There will be regular interactions and review the extensiveness of the problem and try to identify the dealers and peddlers,” said Lyngdoh.
