Shillong, April 13: In a significant push to improve education infrastructure, the State Government has undertaken a large-scale renovation drive covering nearly 90 percent of Government Lower Primary (LP) schools across the State. Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma shared that the government is committed to ensuring quality learning environments for students, with further plans to address the needs of SSA and Adhoc schools as well.
“Look, I don’t have the figure with me, but maximum—90% of all the government LP schools—are almost in the process and complete renovation,” said Sangma, highlighting the scale of work already in progress.
He acknowledged that while most government LP schools are being upgraded, some—approximately 100 to 200—are still awaiting sanction. However, he assured that they will be included soon. “We have sanctioned, and some are left out—some more, around 100 to 200, are still left from the government sanction. But for the SSA and the Adhoc, there is a lot to be done… we will be doing (it) from different funds,” he said.

The Minister praised the government’s collaborative approach in mobilizing funds from various sources. “We are also contributing from MDCs’ funds, from MP funds, some MLAs, from CMSDF—from different sections we are getting the funds and we are renovating,” he said, adding that this reflects a strong collective effort to uplift educational facilities.
In response to concerns about a school in his constituency reportedly lacking a proper roof and windows, he clarified, “I have already sanctioned the repairing for 45 schools, be it SSA or government LP, at the rate of Rs. 2 lakhs each.”
When asked about the renovation demand for Seelpang Government LP School under Rongara C&RD Block in South Garo Hills by the A’chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF), Sangma explained that the matter had already been addressed. “I think they were not aware. That particular school is under my constituency and it was damaged during the storm last year. We have already sanctioned under the disaster fund for the renovation work already,” he said.
He further informed, “I think the BDO has already received (the funds), and the work is in process.”

Sangma also stressed the government’s continued support for school maintenance and the role of educators in ensuring day-to-day upkeep. “The government provides funds for maintenance of the schools for all the government schools. I think if any minor issue arises, the teachers should also try to address it, as this is also their responsibility. But for the (major) repairing, the Government has already sanctioned (funds),” he said.
