Shillong, Oct 30: The Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MSERC), led by newly appointed chairman Chandan Kumar Mondol, recently issued a revised electricity tariff that lowers rates for industrial High Tension (HT) consumers while raising costs for domestic users, sparking widespread concern.
Speaking on the development, Power Minister A.T. Mondal said, “The tariff is fixed by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Let all the orders come out, then we will review everything as per industrial and domestic requirements. Some relief was given to industries to encourage investment, but we will assess this situation comprehensively.”
In the updated tariff structure effective October 28, domestic consumers face an increased fixed charge of Rs 90 per kilowatt per month. Energy rates for households are set at Rs 5.55 per kilowatt for the first 100 units and Rs 5.65 for the next 100 units. The prior 2024-2025 tariff under then-chairman Peter W. Ingty had a fixed charge of Rs 80 per kilowatt, with energy costs for the first 100 units at Rs 4 per kilowatt.
In contrast, industrial consumers will benefit from reduced energy charges, with a fixed charge of Rs 310 per kilowatt per month and an energy charge of Rs 6.51 per kilowatt. Previously, this charge was Rs 7.80 per kilowatt during 2023-2024.
When questioned about the increased household rates, Minister Mondal explained, “See, everywhere the rate is reviewed almost on an annual basis. It depends on how the regulatory commission has evaluated the situation, and we will also review it from our side.”
The MSERC has ordered that the revised rates be reflected in billing for all categories of consumers starting December 2024.
