Shillong, July 23: In a rare display of bipartisan unity, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, in collaboration with the Forest Department, organised a tree plantation programme at the new Assembly complex in Mawdiangdiang on Tuesday, reaffirming the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The event brought together top leaders of the state, including Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijaya Shankar, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Speaker Timothy D. Shira, cabinet ministers, MLAs across party lines, and senior officials.
Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijaya Shankar, who lauded the new Assembly building as “wonderful,” stressed the importance of protecting Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity. He urged the government to prioritise native, medicinal, and endangered species, and cautioned against monoculture plantations, warning of their long-term ecological impact. “You are lucky to be born here,” he said, calling Meghalaya a “heaven” that must be preserved for future generations.
Speaker Thomas A. Sangma described the initiative as more than ceremonial, calling it a collective pledge to protect the environment. He announced that every tree planted by dignitaries would carry a name plaque, symbolising a lasting personal and institutional commitment to a greener future.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma echoed the sentiment, stating, “What we do today echoes in eternity.” He called on legislators to not only plant trees but also nurture them. Referring to the successful “One Citizen, One Tree” campaign, the Chief Minister noted that nearly two crore trees have already been planted across Meghalaya. He also linked the initiative to the broader fight against climate change, which he said is visibly impacting even the rain-rich state.
