Shillong, Dec 30: Meghalaya on Friday commemorated the 160th death anniversary of Jaintia freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah.
Leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Jaiaw MDC and former KSU president Paul Lyngdoh, present Cabinet Minister and former General Secretary of KSU Hamletson Dohling and the leaders of the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and others laid wreaths at the monument of the freedom fighter near the Civil Hospital, Shillong.
U Kiang Nangbah had revolted against the British when Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills region were not part of India. He was hanged publicly at ïawmusiang in Jowai town in West Jaiñtia Hills district on December 30, 1862.

Remembering the freedom fighter, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in a tweet said, “Today we pay tribute to the martyrdom of U Kiang Nangbah, the freedom fighter of #Meghalaya who led a rebellion against the British army to protect our land and our people. The story of his bravery will always be etched in our hearts”.
