Meghalaya police ready and proactive, to ensure no re-grouping of GNLA: Tynsong

Must read

Shillong, Feb 23: A day after an unconfirmed social media post came out claiming the re-grouping of the erstwhile Garo National Liberation Army militant outfit, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister for Home (police) Prestone Tynsong, on Friday, assured that the state police, which broke the backbone of the most powerful militant outfit in the state in 2018, is well prepared to ensure no re-grouping ever takes place by the disbanded GNLA, either in Garo Hills or any part of the state.

“Our police force is very much proactive and we will make sure that re-grouping does not happen,” Tynsong told reporters.

He said that it is yet to be verified if at all the news on the GNLA-R (Regrouping) is true or false.

“But what I am trying to tell you 24×7, police forces are always ready and we are proactive to any such, be it the news, or be it the intention of maybe a few group of people, or maybe some young boys who wanted maybe to have that luxury of having a new group or something. We are alert and then we will not at all sleep and we will make sure that such re-grouping does not arise,” the deputy CM assured.

He claimed that the intelligence wing and reports of the state police are fully strengthened to face any eventuality, adding, “Please leave it to us and let me assure again that re-grouping will not at all happen and we are not going to allow that.”

Following the collapse of the GNLA outfit with the killing of its chief Sohan D Shira in March 2018, Garo Hills has witnessed relative peace with no major violent incidents having occurred since then.

Last year, a handful of boys tried to extort money by using the GNLA name and publishing its revival on social media only to land in a police net where they confessed it was an attempt to earn a quick buck.

Police do not rule out such a similar stunt in Thursday’s social media publication of GNLA-Regrouping.
