Shillong, Dec 30: The 162nd death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah, a renowned freedom fighter, was observed near the Shillong Civil Hospital on Monday.
“We are gathered here today to pay our respects to U Kiang Nangbah, a true hero of our state,” said Thomas Passah, President of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM). “Even after 162 years, his sacrifices and bravery continue to inspire us.”
Passah emphasized the significance of remembering U Kiang Nangbah’s contributions to the indigenous people of Khasi Jaintia. “It is unfortunate that the current generation has forgotten the importance of Kiang Nangbah’s sacrifices,” he said. “We must celebrate this day with great pride to promote peace and harmony among our people.”
Passah also criticized the government for not observing U Kiang Nangbah’s death anniversary in a big way. “It is disappointing that the government has not recognized the importance of this day,” he said. “We will continue to pressure them to give Kiang Nangbah the recognition he deserves.”
KHNAM also asked the District Councils to install a statue of U Kiang Nangbah in the District Council’s office next year. “We will not rest until Nangbah’s legacy is properly honored,” Passah said.
U Kiang Nangbah was a prominent figure in the resistance movement against the British colonial government in the 19th century. He led an uprising against the British in 1862, which, although ultimately unsuccessful, earned him a revered place in the history of Meghalaya’s struggle for independence.
