Shillong, Aug 12: Meghalaya government has decided to not allow any individual to cross the international India-Bangladesh border in view of the unstable situation in the neighbouring country. The State has also sought additional forces to strengthen the security along the international border in view of attempts made to illegally enter the Indian territory.

“We also urged the government of India through the Union Home Minister that, if necessary, more manpower can be provided along the border areas so that the security can be reinforced,” Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, said after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday to review the overall situation along the border areas.
“To that, the Union Home Minister said he will examine the scenario and situation and take necessary actions, if necessary,” Sangma said.
The CM was also accompanied by deputy chief minister in-charge Home, Prestone Tynsong, during the meeting.
Sangma further informed that during the review meeting, they briefed the Union Home Minister that the BSF and the Army were keeping very strict vigil on the international border and, at the same time, Meghalaya police is also on high alert.
“We also informed him that we have put night curfew all along the international border to further strengthen the overall security scenario in the border zones,” the CM said while adding “We reiterated to the Union Home Minister that we should not allow at this point in time any individual to cross the border as the matter is very sensitive and in detail discussions were done on that matter.”
“The Union Home Minister has further stated in the meeting that the government of India is not going to allow any individual to cross over and all measures are being taken to ensure the border is securely guarded so that no movement takes place across the border,” he added further.
The meeting assumes significance in view of the arrest of seven Bangladeshi nationals along with two Indian facilitators by the Border Security Force (BSF) and state police at a checkpoint in Pynursla, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya on Saturday.
Last week, close to 1000 Bangladeshi nationals tried to enter India in the Cooch Bihar district. However, they were stopped by the BSF.
On Monday morning, Assam police pushed back four Bangladeshi nationals in the wee hours of near the Indo-Bangla border. They were trying to enter India at around 1.30 AM on Monday through the Karimganj sector of the India-Bangladesh border, but were detected by alert Assam police and pushed back.
Attacks on minorities have increased in Bangladesh since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister and fleeing the country. Bangladesh interim government’s head Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus on Saturday called for an end to attacks on the minority communities in the country, and asked for protection to all Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist families.
