Shillong, Aug 23: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Thomas A. Sangma, on Friday said he is waiting for Congress leader and incumbent Leader of the Opposition (LO), Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, to submit his resignation from the post, as the party no longer has the requisite numbers in the Assembly to allow him to continue in the role.
Briefing the media after the first day of the Autumn Session of the Assembly, the Speaker said, “I believe everyone is aware that the current LO has only one member left in the House. Therefore, the Speaker’s office will have to issue a denotification, or denotify him.”
When asked whether the LO post would go to the TMC, he responded, “I cannot say because none of the opposition parties have submitted a formal request. I can take my time in making the decision and thoroughly examine the matter. I cannot make a decision without a submission being brought forward. As of now, the requisite number is not there.”
Regarding the possibility of a combined opposition, the Speaker noted that there is currently no such coalition.
When asked when the Speaker’s office is likely to issue the denotification notice to the incumbent LO, he said, “I am waiting for the current LO to submit his resignation, so that we do not have to denotify him.”
It is worth mentioning that recently, three legislators from the Indian National Congress—Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh from Umsning, Gabriel Wahlang from Nongstoin, and Charles Marngar from Mawhati—merged with the National People’s Party (NPP). As a result, Congress is now left with only one MLA, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
