Shillong, June 20: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma announced today that he will soon convene a meeting with representatives of all political parties with elected legislators in the Assembly. This meeting will address the roles of the Leader of Opposition and the Opposition Chief Whip.
Following the resignation of Congress Legislator Saleng A. Sangma from Gambegre after his election to the Parliament as Tura MP, the Gambegre constituency is now vacant. Consequently, the number of Congress legislators in the Assembly has decreased to four, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is now the single largest party in the opposition with five MLAs. Ronnie V. Lyngdoh currently serves as the Leader of Opposition.
The position of Opposition Chief Whip, previously held by Saleng Sangma, is now vacant. The Speaker indicated that a decision on these matters will be made before the upcoming Autumn Session.
Responding to queries about the allocation of both the Leader of Opposition and the Opposition Chief Whip roles to the Congress despite both Congress and TMC holding five seats each, the Speaker explained that the Voice of the People Party (VPP) had recommended Saleng Sangma for the Opposition Chief Whip role in 2023. This led to the Congress also obtaining the post of Leader of Opposition. The Speaker’s remarks came after Saleng Sangma’s resignation from the Gambegre Assembly constituency.
