Meghalaya state movement leader from Garo Hills no more

Tura, Aug 13: Retired Meghalaya state movement leader who became MDC in GHADC for 27 years and held position of Executive Member (EM), Deputy EM and even CEM, Binsing R Marak, is no more.

He passed away from Covid infection in Tura civil hospital, on Thursday night. He was 99 years of age.

Some important details of his life are

Binsing R Marak was born on October 31 1922.

He joined political struggle in 1947 at the young age of 23 years by joining the Garo National Council, the only political party in the region in those days which was struggling for a separate Meghalaya state out of Assam.

In 1942, he volunteered and joined the British forces in World War II and was given the rank of Sector Commander of the Garo Porter Corps in Burma ensuring urgently needed food and supplies reached the British forces who were clashing with Japanese troops that invaded and took over much of the area.

He was first elected to GHADC from Babelapara constituency in 1957 and continued as member for consecutive terms from the same seat, until 1983 when he hung up his boots.

His positions included Executive Member (EM), Deputy EM for many years and finally became CEM two times.
