Shillong, Oct 2: Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma has emphasized the need for the state to embrace technology in education, revealing several initiatives, including the installation of smart classrooms across schools.
“Digital education, smart classrooms—this is in the pipeline, and Meghalaya is looking to install smart classrooms as much as possible,” Sangma said. He stressed that integrating technology into education is “the need of the hour.”
Sangma pointed out that NCERT textbooks are already available online, but access remains limited due to connectivity issues. “If we have proper connectivity, it would be easily accessible to all,” he noted. However, the state is yet to fully leverage these digital resources, though he expressed confidence that this will improve in the coming days.
The government also plans to introduce QR codes for subjects such as science and mathematics, which will roll out from the next academic session. Sangma explained, “All the topics will have conceptual briefings, questions will be solved for board exams, and textbooks will be made available through these QR codes.”
When asked about the ongoing challenges with internet and mobile connectivity in rural areas, Sangma acknowledged the issue, stating, “Around 80 percent has come up, but 10-20 percent still remains, and not up to the expected level. Our Chief Minister is also aware of the matter, and mobile connectivity will reach the nook and corners of the State very soon.”
Reflecting on his own constituency, which previously struggled with poor connectivity, Sangma added, “Today, 90 percent is connected with internet and mobile connectivity, and I am sure this should not be a problem anymore.” He expressed hope that once connectivity improves across the state, students will have easier access to educational materials online.
