Shillong, June 28: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Thursday said the state government will pursue the Centre to declare the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) as an Institute of National Importance (INI).

Lyngdoh said that she would take up the issue during her meeting with the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare in New Delhi next week.

“The first thing we want to take up before the purview of the Health Minister, Government of India is to discuss the matters relating to NEIGRIHMS. The very fact that NEIGRIHMS continues to have a status not like a national institute like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and others, so we wanted that to get sorted out,” she said.

Lyngdoh added that the government also wants to fast track and operationalize cancer hospital adjacent to the NEIGRIHMS hospital in the same campus. “This is a very important project so we would like to bring it to the attention of the health minister,” she said.
