Shillong, Feb 11: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will attend the closing ceremony of the 38th National Games at Halwandi, Uttarakhand, along with Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri on February 14.

Home Minister Amit Shah will hand over the IOA flag of the National Games to Conrad K. Sangma during the grand closing ceremony, in the presence of the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), P.T. Usha, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Union Sports Minister Rekha Arya.

In February–March, Meghalaya will host the 39th National Games in Shillong, with events also scheduled in Tura and Jowai.

The games are being held in the state during its 55th year of statehood.

A delegation from the state, including officials from the sports department, the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, as well as athletes and coaches from all three regions of the state, shall be traveling to Uttarakhand.

“The National Games are a symbol of the nation’s drive to pursue excellence in sports. It is an honour for Meghalaya to host the event and have our youth take in the excitement of the Games!” said the Chief Minister.

Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri said, “Meghalaya has seen significant developments in its sports ecosystem in recent times and is ready to be considered amongst the sporting powerhouses of the nation. We look forward to welcoming athletes and fans alike to Meghalaya.”

The 39th edition of the National Games was originally scheduled for 2022 but was delayed due to the pandemic and scheduling changes in other host states. Since then, the state has utilised this time to build Meghalaya’s sports ecosystem, investing in sports infrastructure across the state and supporting the growth of talent.

The announcement comes after Meghalaya’s most successful National Games campaign, where five medals were won by athletes from the state in Uttarakhand. Meghalaya has already begun preparations for the event in collaboration with the MSOA, identifying nearly 40 sports for consideration.

Further, the state will host events in all three major cities of Meghalaya – Shillong, Tura, and Jowai. It is estimated that nearly twelve thousand athletes will participate in the games. The marquee infrastructure of the J.N. Sports Complex, the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex, and the Wahiajer Stadium will be used during the Games, along with other venues such as the Mawdiangdiang Sports Complex and the Integrated Hospitality and Sports Complex, which will also be ready.
