Shillong, March 28: Meghalaya’s excise department is all set to roll out the implementation of the QR Code based tracking system for different products within 60 days.

“We are looking at the possibility of rolling out by June. Within 60 days, we will be rolling out,” Commissioner of Excise Matsiewdor War Nongbri told reporters after a meeting chaired by Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Friday.

She informed that the district officers will be given a more in-depth training on the track and trace system being put in place from the time the IMFL, etc. are manufactured till the time they are bought by the consumers.

“Every office, each and every bottling plant, each and every distillery and bonded warehouse etc. right up to retail shops will be having this track and trace system. So, each and every QR code will be scanned and on an immediate basis we will be able to track exactly where our goods have reached and whether they have been delivered and whether they have been sold,” Nongbri said adding “This will help the department to a very large extent and I am sure that since we are able to track immediately, we will be able to see the revenue of the department within a click of a button.”

Asked, the commissioner of excise said, “Because we already have a system that has been approved and the organization (M/s CMP Enforce System LLP from Delhi) which has won the tender will be taking up the exercise and they will have their people in place in different districts. This will not take time. We already have our officers up to constables etc in different bonded warehouses (for rolling out the implementation).”

Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, while announcing the cabinet’s decision to approve the proposal for introduction of the QR Code based tracking system in the excise department, had informed that the objective is to streamline the entire process to ensure there is no revenue leakage.

According to him, the revenue generation of the excise department is expected to increase by 5 to 10%.
