Shillong, April 4:Meghalaya is taking the textile industry to newer heights following two of its products, ‘Ryndia,’ along with its handloom products getting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

This milestone has been hailed as a transformative moment for the state’s weaving community.

State Textiles Minister Paul Lyngdoh expressed immense pride and optimism over the achievement. “It is very good, welcome news for our weavers, artisans, and the entire Department of Textiles,” he said during a press briefing on Friday.

He emphasized that this success was the result of four years of tireless efforts by the Department of Textiles and the Weavers Association. “After four years of unrelenting work and support from the Weavers Association, we finally managed to get the GI tag for our Ryndia. This is a huge victory for Meghalaya’s textile industry,” he remarked.

Lyngdoh underscored the importance of the GI tag in securing the exclusivity and marketability of Ryndia. “Our weavers now have a very sure and confident outlook in furthering their trade. This step ensures the exclusivity of the product and significantly boosts its marketability,” he stated.

To address concerns about inclusivity in showcasing their products, the minister revealed plans to establish a new Textiles Hub in Nongpoh, which would serve as a dedicated platform for weavers and artisans. “Inside the hub itself, there will be a plethora of textile-related activities, including spaces for weavers and artisans to showcase their products. Visitors will also get to witness live demonstrations of colouring and dyeing processes,” he explained.

Additionally, Lyngdoh announced collaborations with leading names in the textile industry and government initiatives aimed at transforming more villages into weaving hubs. “We are taking the industry to an entirely new level, with measures to support weavers as individuals and societies,” he assured.
