Shillong, May 9: Shillong’s already picturesque roads are set to get even more beautiful as Meghalaya government is planning to have its major roads have avenue plantation, further elevating the overall beauty of Shillong.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the avenue plantation project after inspecting the newly completed Ummir to Mawkhanu Road, one of the key access points to the upcoming Administrative and Knowledge City in New Shillong Township, on Thursday.
The 8–10 km stretch of Ummir to Mawkhanu Road will soon be adorned with avenue plantations, including cherry blossom trees and indigenous species, planted in a uniform, planned layout to create a symmetrical and serene visual experience. “We’re starting here with cherry blossoms or other local species arranged in straight lines to offer a consistent and breathtaking view—similar to the famous tree tunnels seen in places like Japan, Germany, or the Cotswolds in England,” Sangma said during a day-long inspection of infrastructure works in the area.

He emphasized the state’s vision to create roads that are not just functional but also visually inspiring, akin to some of the world’s most celebrated tree-lined avenues. “This beautiful, newly constructed road is not just about connectivity. It’s about creating a legacy of infrastructure that blends with nature,” he affirmed.
The Chief Minister also said the new road will have a dedicated cycling track.
The plantation drive, to begin this season itself in collaboration with the Soil Conservation Department, will extend to other parts of New Shillong Township and eventually expand into existing roads within Shillong city. The aim is to replicate the aesthetic impact seen in globally renowned roads, turning Meghalaya’s capital into a model of urban greenery and thoughtful design.
The visit also included an inspection of the ongoing Unity Mall construction, another key component of the New Shillong Township vision.
