Shillong, Aug 2: Meghalaya government has urged professionals and students working and studying abroad to register with the government portal while assuring details will be kept confidential.
Addressing media persons on Friday, MDA spokesperson and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh said, “Registration of professionals/students working and studying abroad is a very important move on the part of the state government.”
He said the decision was taken following the recent violent incidents in Bangladesh where a number of Meghalayans had to flee from that country.
“So things were chaotic because in the first place we didn’t have data based about Meghalayans who are residing or are travelling to Bangladesh. So once registration is done, the state government will be duly strengthened with the required data based so that whenever such exigencies occur our reaction time will be much faster,” he added.
According to him, registration however is not compulsory. “But we are encouraging them to register but (their details) will be strictly confidential,” he said.
