Tura, Dec 7: Despite the rain, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh inaugurated the Me’gong Festival on Thursday evening at Jengjal-Baljek in West Garo Hills.
The sudden rain, that has lasted close of 24 hours, has to a certain extent dampened the festive spirit as people across the region were waiting to watch legendary Indian rock band ‘Parikrama’ perform.
Nonetheless, the event has other activities to keep those that braved the rain entertained. One of those are the food stalls, serving indigenous Garo dishes alongside the regular fast-food and local brews to keep the festive mood alive and people warm.
There is also the display of local handicraft products that one can pick-up as souvenir.
Jengjal-Baljek is about 32 kms from district capital Tura.
The Baljek airport in Jengjal (hence called Jengjal-Baljek), which is yet to be operationalised, is the venue for the event; it recently hosted the 100 Drums Wangala Festival as well. With the Tura town unable to host festivals of much magnitude that draw thousands of people from across the region and elsewhere, Jengjal has become an ideal spot to take the crowd away from the town without the worry of traffic jams and other inconveniences.
Although day 1 has been washed out, the line of artists scheduled for Thursday will be performing on Friday and Saturday evening. Saturday evening will probably draw the biggest of crowds as the international fame ‘Vengaboys’ will be performing in the evening to conclude the festival on a high.
