Shillong, Sept 15: In solidarity with the Meitei community in Manipur, which has suffered significant losses due to renewed violence, the Manipuri Elders’ Consortium Shillong (MECS) organized a protest on Sunday, condemning the use of weaponized drones and sophisticated weapons by militants to attack both security forces and civilians in Manipur.

The protest, held at Manipuri Rajbari in Shillong, saw people carrying placards with messages such as “Restore Internet in Imphal Valley” and “Stop Killing Innocent Meiteis.”

MECS president, N. Munish Singh, emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging the government to ensure the safety of villagers. The community plans to write to the central government, seeking immediate intervention and support for the affected population.

The protest comes as the ethnic conflict in Manipur stretches into its 16th month, claiming over 250 lives, injuring many others, and displacing over 60,000 people. Singh called on the government to take swift measures to restore peace in Manipur.

The Manipur government has imposed a temporary internet ban amid ongoing protests and clamped indefinite curfew in valley districts.
