Shillong, June 7: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has asked Chief Secretary, MS Rao to submit detailed reports within 10 days into the death of a pregnant nurse at Ganesh Das hospital and the recent tragic incident that led to five labourers being trapped inside a coal mine in East Jaintia Hills.

A statement issued by the MHRC secretary on Monday said it has taken cognizance of the case filed by the Congress Mahila state president on the matter relating to the death of (L) Manisha Turnia who was 24 weeks pregnant alleging the negligence and the over zealousness of the hospital authority to disengage her from duties to which she succumbed due to her ill health.

The Commission also registered a case filed by Yeahyea Hussain, the neighbour of the miner trapped in Umpleng, East Jaintia Hills.

According to the complainant, the families of the miners have also been denied to visit the incident spot.

The Commission reminded the state of the Article 21 of the Constitution that states “No person shall be deprived of his/her life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law”.
