Military-grade drone batteries seized in Assam

Imphal, June 16: Security forces have unearthed more attempts by militant groups to disturb peace in violence-ridden Manipur.

Sleuths of the Assam Special Task Force have arrested a man today for procuring military-grade drone batteries which were meant for a militant group operating in Manipur.

The incident came to light when Assam police arrested a person identified as Sanjib Kumar Mishra a resident of the Noonmati area, Guwahati with drone parts from the Rupnagar area of the city yesterday evening.

After a prolonged operation the items were being seized as the person arrested was trying to transport them to some terrorist groups based in Manipur. The operation is seen as a huge success in terms of thwarting a major sabotage activity in violence engulfed Manipur state.

In this regard a case has been registered vide STF PS Case No 10/2024 U/S 121 IPC R/W 16/18 UA (P) Act. 1967.

Earlier, on Friday, June 15, the STF successfully intercepted a vehicle at Sonapur on the city outskirts and apprehended one youth from Manipur, Khaigoulen Kipgen. Partha Sarthi Mahanta, IGP, Assam Police STF, has hinted that a banned group based in Manipur is attempting to procure military-grade drones to probably carry out sabotage activities in the state.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has recently arrested a key accused from Imphal Airport in a case relating to a transnational conspiracy by insurgents and terrorist gangs to exacerbate the Manipur violence and spread terror in the northeastern states.

Thongminthang Haokip @ Thangboi Haokip @ Roger (KNF-MC) has been arrested under various sections of the IPC and UA(P) Act in case RC-24/2023/NIA/DLI, which was registered suo moto by NIA on 19th July last year.

The conspiracy had been hatched by Kuki and Zomi insurgents backed by terrorist organisations based in the north-eastern states and in neighbouring Myanmar to exploit the current ethnic unrest in the region and wage war against the government of India through violent attacks, as per NIA investigations.

The accused was found to have been involved in attacks on security forces at various places during the ongoing insurgency and violence. He was in touch with the insurgent group, Kuki National Front (KNF)-B of Myanmar, for logistics support to aggravate the volatile situation in the state of Manipur and create terror in the minds of the people.

NIA investigations have revealed the accused had met the leaders of PDF/KNF-B (Myanmar) for the supply of arms, ammunition and explosives for use in the current phase of violence in Manipur. He has admitted to having participated in several armed attacks against security forces and on the opposite group in the current crisis in the state. He has also admitted to being a member of the Kuki National Front-Military Council (KNF-MC) and United Tribal Volunteers (UTV).

Further investigations are continuing to identify and track others involved in the conspiracy and scuttle the terrorist outfits’ plans to destroy the peace and stability of the northeastern region.

The back-to-back arrests and seizures of military-grade drone batteries by the Assam STF are seen as a massive success in terms of thwarting a possible sabotage activity in violence-engulfed Manipur.
