Imphal, Feb 15: A heavy deployment of central security forces took over the streets of Imphal and other parts of Manipur on Thursday night, hours after President Droupadi Murmu imposed President’s Rule in the conflict-ridden state. The Army, Assam Rifles, and paramilitary forces ramped up surveillance, bracing for potential unrest in the valley.
The sudden imposition of central rule has triggered sharp reactions, particularly among the Meitei community. At Imphal’s historic Ima Market, a hub of women traders, discontent simmered as sellers voiced their frustration.
“Manipur has been under President’s Rule before, but this time it feels unnecessary,” said one of the vendors, declining to be named. “Our youths are defending themselves with weapons in this ongoing crisis. But instead of helping, the Centre continues to neglect us. They don’t treat us as Indians.”
The trader also pointed fingers at Manipur’s political leadership, blaming internal rifts within the ruling BJP for the deepening crisis. “Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned because he couldn’t resolve the situation. Instead of appointing a new leader, they let the Assembly be adjourned. That proves they have no interest in us,” she added.
Another seller expressed shock at the Centre’s decision. “The violence between the Meiteis and Kukis began on May 3, 2023. We hoped the central government would restore peace. Instead, they imposed President’s Rule. What is their real intention?” she questioned.
While many in the valley remain apprehensive, the move has been welcomed in the hill areas, particularly by the Zomi and Kuki communities. The Zomi Council, in a statement, hailed the development, calling it a step towards resolving the prolonged ethnic conflict.

“We believe this is the beginning of an active dialogue to end the crisis,” a Zomi Council leader stated. “If a new chief minister is appointed, they must be inclusive—not someone who represents only a particular community. There must be fair representation for the Zomis and Kukis.”
As tensions persist, the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur looks like it has deepened the existing divide, fueling both hope and anxiety across different communities. Whether it leads to peace or further turmoil remains to be seen.
