Kohima, Aug 23: At least 17 workers were killed on Wednesday (August 23) after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed near the Sairang area of Mizoram, police said.
A tragic incident is said to have taken place at around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
According to a confirmed report, 27 workers died on the spot.
Sources said that at least 30–40 workers are still trapped in the rubble, and the number of casualties is likely to rise.
However, Railways is yet to officially give out numbers.

The Sairang branch Young Mizo Association are currently taking up rescue operation, sources added.
It is worth mentioning that Sairang is just on the outskirt of Aizawl, a one hour drive drive from the capital. The railway construction has been ongoing for a few years.
