Aizawl, Sep 14: In a massive crackdown against the narcotics trade, Assam Rifles troopers seized a huge quantity of drugs worth Rs 87.84 crore in Mizoram’s Champhai district.
Security forces recovered two lakh highly addictive methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 60 crore and 3.978 kg of heroin valued at Rs 27.84 crore from an abandoned house along the World Bank Road from Zokhawthar to Melbuk in Champhai district, bordering Myanmar.
The seized drugs, smuggled from Myanmar, have been handed over to Zokhawthar police station for further legal proceedings.

“Ongoing smuggling of contraband items is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram and India. The Assam Rifles have continued their efforts against illegal smuggling and have also doubled their efforts to nab the kingpins of the Narco-Cartel in Mizoram,” a statement said.
Due to the demand for drugs, smuggling of narcotic items has increased in the northeast, and through various routes, it has entered the region.
In another incident, the Assam Rifles and the Mizoram Police, in a joint raid, seized 1,800 bullets from AK-47 rifles from three persons, including two Myanmar nationals, in Siaha district on Tuesday.
Assam Rifles have started a massive crackdown against the drug trade, and so far, huge quantities of drugs have been seized.
Tripura’s 856 km border with Bangladesh and Mizoram’s 510 km and Manipur’s 400 km unfenced frontier with Myanmar have become an easy corridor for drugs smuggling in northeast India.
