Aizawl, Dec 5: After a great debacle, Mizoram Congress president Lalsawta is all set to resign from his post as party president following the party’s dismal performance in the Mizoram Assembly Polls 2023, the results of which were announced on Monday.
Congress managed to win only one seat while BJP won two seats in the just concluded polls.
Lalsawta himself lost the contest for the Aizawl West III constituency, which he was incidentally contesting for the fourth time.
Lalsawta had won the Aizawl East II seat in 2008 and 2013.
He had been appointed as the Mizoram Congress president in 2021.
On the other hand, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) only manged to secured 10 seats. CM Zoramthanga himself also lost to ZPM’s Lalthansanga by 2,101 votes in the Aizawl East-1 seat.
Mizoram CM Zoramthanga said, “Because of the anti-incumbency effect and the people are not satisfied with my performance so I lost… I accept the verdict of the people and I hope that the next government will perform well… It (the reason) is the anti-incumbency and Covid onslaught.”
The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) won a landslide 27 seats in the 40-member Mizoram assembly under Lalduhoma’s leadership.
