Mizoram: Health Minister Lalrinpuii reports 438 alcohol-related deaths in 10 Months

Aizawl, Mar 8: Mizoram’s Health Minister, Lalrinpuii, stated on Thursday that at least 438 alcohol-related deaths, including 77 women, have been reported in the state over the past ten months since April last year.

While replying to a query of ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) MLA Jeje Lalpekhlua, the minister said that 361 men and 77 women died due to alcohol related issues in between April last year and January this year.

Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma earlier said that the state government would soon review the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, 2019 as the state government has been facing revenue crunch.

The previous Mizo National Front (MNF) government, as part of its election promises, enacted the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, 2019, to curb the misuse of alcohol and drugs.
Of the 86 people, 76 died last year and 10 this year (January and February).

Meanwhile, an official of Mizoram’s Excise and Narcotics Department said that 86 people including 13 women have died since January last year and upto February this year due to consumption of various drugs.
