Aizawl, Dec 25: Mizoram police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the lynching of 31-year-old David Lalmuanpuia, a daily wage laborer. The incident took place on the night of December 18, 2024, in the Tuirial Airfield locality, on the outskirts of Aizawl.
The events unfolded after the local pastor reported to the Village Defence Party (VDP) that his quarters had been burgled while he attended a church service, with Rs. 26,000 allegedly stolen. Acting on the pastor’s accusations, the VDP detained David Lalmuanpuia and his 20-year-old friend, Lalduhsaka, and beated them up. Tragically, David succumbed to his injuries.
David’s mother, Nunthangmawii, recounted the horrifying ordeal. “They were brutally beating my son with a water pipe. Even when I begged them to stop, they did not listen,” she said, visibly shaken. Nunthangmawii added that she and Lalduhsaka’s mother had approached the pastor, pleading for forgiveness and intervention, but were rebuffed. “The pastor simply said he had reported the matter to the VDP and that their actions were beyond his control,” she said.
Following a complaint filed by David’s family, the police have registered a case of culpable homicide under Section 105/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the seven arrested suspects, all members of the same family.
Lalduhsaka, who survived the assault, is currently recovering from his injuries and is expected to provide crucial testimony.
