Aizawl, Dec 12: In a significant political development, ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) MLA Lalbiakzam was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
Lalbiakzama, 58, was elected to the assembly for the first time from the Chalfilh assembly constituency under Saitual district in the November 7 assembly polls, results of which were announced on December 4.
Pro-tem Speaker Lalfamkima, who conducted the Speaker’s election on the first day of the newly constituted 9th Mizoram Assembly, said that the opposition did not nominate any candidate for the post of the Speaker.
Lalbiakzama, a businessman turned politician, had unsuccessfully contested the assembly elections in 2003 and 2013 on Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) tickets.
Of the 40 members of Mizoram Assembly, 23 have been elected for the first time. 20 of them are from ZPM, two from MNF and one from BJP.
ZPM led by Lalduhoma voted out the MNF-led government securing 27 seats in the 40-member assembly, while the MNF, led by former Chief Minister Zoramthanga, bagged only 10 seats while the BJP got two.
