Shillong, Mar 29: With the objectives to have a deliberation on the state budget by expert panellists from academia and practice and also to make the students aware about the importance of knowing the major areas/sectors where the budget focuses so as to have a sound comprehension about the potential future trajectory of the state economy and also an opportunity for the students to interact and discuss with the speakers, the Econ Club of the Department of Economics, Commerce and Management, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) celebrated the World Economics Day by organizing a Panel Discussion on the State Budget of Meghalaya 2022-23 on Tuesday at the university campus.The panel on this occasion included Dr Jemino Mawthoh, Associate Professor, NEHU and former MLA; Dr. Eliza Dutta, Asst Professor of Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) and Rosanna Lyngdoh, Director of Impulse NGO Network. A special address by Dr V. T. Darlong, former VC of MLCU, was also given where he spoke on the effects of the National Budget on the North East and environmental concerns of the region.
All three speakers spoke on the allocation for the Health Care budget in the state and that there should be a more intense focus on the public health sector. Dr. J. Mawthoh discussed the Green Development, the Power sector and he also spoke on the unemployment of the youth and concluded that there is a need for Economic Salvation. Rosanna Lyngdoh gave information about the overview of the welfare scheme which she stressed that the state budget did not include certain schemes regarding the Climate Change, the elderly and senior citizens.
This event was also part of the Experiential Learning for the students of the department.
