TURA, Dec 8: After weeks of uncertainty on the fate of the much awaited musical night of the era, it has finally been made official. The rock group Michael Learns To Rock is arriving in Garo Hills on Sunday to hold a concert at Jengjal the next day as part of a two day musical fest.
The Danish group will be belting out their world famous hits at Jengjal’s Baljek airport on December 12th to an open crowd of several thousand fans from the length and breadth of Garo Hills.
The show has been named MLTR LIVE IN CONCERT after the previous Me.gong festival, scheduled for December 1st to 3rd, was cancelled by the Meghalaya Government in view of the Assam police firing on villagers at Mukroh village in Jaintia Hills which resulted in the death of five villagers and one Assam forest guard personnel.
However, soft rock band Smokie’s lead vocalist Chris Norman who was to perform at the Me.gong Festival will not be part of the upcoming two day concert due to already booked engagements elsewhere.
Sikkim’s most well known rock band in India, Girish and the Chronicles will be performing on the same day. Girish will be opening the concert before MLTR takes to the stage on December 12.
A fashion show showcasing ethnic wear by some of the renowned designers from the region will also be held on the first day.
Garo Hills most famous rock band Riprap will also perform on stage on December 12.
The second day will see American reggae band Big Mountain perform some of their most sensational hits, including this famous one “Baby, I love your way” that became a top 10 single hit in the United States in 1994.
Bangladesh’ newest and most famous garo pop artist of the season, Antu Rechil will also be enthralling the crowds on the last day with his hit songs ‘Arara’ and ‘Wat.e’.
Other musical bands performing at the two day musical fest include Garo rock band Rough Roads, Saldorik and Nokpante.
There will also be a special zone for the sale of the famous rice beer ‘bitchi’ from different traditional Garo villages which is going to be a major hit among wine connoisseurs of the region.
