MN Sherpa elected as speaker of Sikkim Legislative Assembly

Gangtok, June 12: The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party unanimously selected Mingma Norbu Sherpa from Daramdin constituency as the new Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.

The newly formed government of SKM took part as the 11th Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

While Raj Kumari Thapa representing the Yangang Rangang constituency was elected as the Deputy speaker.

The Sikkim Legislative Assembly including the lone Sikkim Democratic Front party legislator Tenzing Norbu Lamtha took oath of office from pro-team speaker Sanjeet Kharel.

Kharel was selected as the pro-team speaker after taking his oath from Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Tuesday. Kharel represents the Namthang Rateypani constituency as its legislator.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay had previously selected 11 legislators to be ministers of the new Sikkim government.

Talking to media persons, Golay said, “Our main focus will be on electricity, water and road connectivity, collectively coined as BiPaSa. We will be laying equal focus on the health and education sector of the State as in the previous government tenure”.

On being asked when the portfolio for 12 ministers will be declared, Golay said, “By today evening everyone will come to know about the minister’s portfolio. I am sure the media has already started speculating who will be minister for which department”.

On being the first Sherpa community representative to be Speaker of the Assembly, Golay said, ” Speaker of the Assembly is a prestigious post”.

Golay, who represents the constituencies of Soreng Chakung and Rhenock constituency, will have to leave one of the constituencies. “I will have to leave one constituency as a legislator, so in 15 days you will know which constituency I will be leaving as a legislator,” Golay said.
