Shillong, Aug 10: After a hiatus of 7 years, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is all set to revive the renowned ‘Monolith Festival’, slated to take place in December, this year, at the Khasi Heritage Village in Mawphlang.
A delegation of KHADC, led by Chairman Lamphrang Blah, conducted an inspection on Thursday at the Mawphlang site to ensure the seamless progress of preparations for this eagerly anticipated event. The forthcoming iteration of the Monolith Festival is anticipated to be a ‘bigger and better’ version compared to previous editions.
Chairman Lamphrang Blah, addressing reporters after the inspection, stated that the decision to resurrect the Monolith Festival is aimed at once again putting the spotlight on the rich traditional culture and heritage of the Khasi tribes. Blah emphasized that this year’s festival would distinguish itself from past iterations due to the support extended by the Conrad Sangma-led MDA government, which is collaborating with the Council to organize the event in a manner that fosters the promotion of the unique Khasi culture and traditions.
The preceding Monolith Festival was held in October 2016 at the same Mawphlang location. However, financial constraints compelled the Council to temporarily suspend the festival.
The primary objective of KHADC in hosting the festival is to consolidate the diverse and rich traditional cultural heritage of the Khasis under a single platform for exhibition and celebration.
The festival provides a platform for Khasi community to come together, celebrate their unique identity, and share their traditions with the broader population, both locals and visitors. The festival typically features various cultural performances, traditional dances, music, arts and crafts exhibitions, and culinary delights that are intrinsic to Khasi culture.
