Imphal, July 19: The Manipur government has decided not to relax curfew in the morning in the Meitei dominated valley districts, including the capital Imphal, and the Kuki-dominated areas for Wednesday after a high level security meeting was held on Tuesday night. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

For the past couple of weeks, morning and daytime relaxation during curfew was allowed.

The 72-hour total shutdown of National Highway 2 entered its third day on Wednesday, and the situation remains peaceful.

In Kangpoki district, there was the closure of all business establishments, government offices, and educational institutions, as well as the halting of all vehicular movement.

However, the firing and arson has been reported from phaileng in Kangpokpi bordering Imphal and Torbung on the Bishnupur- Chirachandpur district borders.

Meanwhile, Police arrested 30 people on Tuesday after a mob set ablaze the vehicle of an IPS officer on duty in the Kwakeithel area in Imphal West, while in another incident, at least 19 women were injured during a clash with the Rapid Action Force in the same district.

In response, security forces used tear gas shells to disperse the mob and later arrested 30 attackers.

Holding the national flag, nine individuals representing families whose members were killed in the Khamenlok incident earlier also joined in the sit-in protest.

Police prevented the protestors from moving from Singjamei Bazaar towards the Chief Minister’s secretariat in Imphal.

And in a significant break through, amidst the ethnic violence between the Meitei-Kuki communities, leaders of the Meitei-Naga communities on Tuesday signed an agreement to resolve the misunderstandings between the two communities that erupted after the killing of a Naga woman by people belonging to Meitei communities.

Leaders of the United Naga Council (UNC) and Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) on Tuesday met Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in the presence of ministers and MLAs belonging to both communities.
